Life Lessons Scholarship Program

Hello! It’s been way too long since I last posted - life and business got busy, and blogging fell to the bottom of the list. But I’m back this September, for Life Insurance Awareness Month, with something worth your time: one thing for your student, one for you.

As some of you may know, I spent years active in the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), including as past president of NAIFA Northeast Florida and chair of the Florida YAT.  Through my work there, I learned about Life Happens and its Life Lessons Scholarship Program - and with my own daughter deep in the college search right now, I got reminded to pass it along.

For Your Student

If you know a student who’s lost a parent or legal guardian, this is worth ten minutes of their time. It’s real money: over $4.1 million awarded to nearly 890 students at 400+ schools - for applicants who share their story in an essay or video.

Who qualifies:

  • Ages 17-24
  • Experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian
  • Attending college, university, or trade school in the US or Puerto Rico this fall
  • US or Puerto Rico legal resident
  • Has a guardian’s permission to apply, if under 18

Applications run February 1 - March 1 so mark the calendar now. No perfect GPA required, just a story.

Even if it’s not for your family, please pass it along: a teacher, a coach, a fellow parent. You might be the one who gets it to the student who needs it.

For You

This scholarship exists because losing a parent often leaves a real financial gap. More than 100 million Americans have no life insurance, and most who do have far less than they need - usually not because they don’t care, but because no one ever walked them through the numbers.

So while you’re thinking about your kid’s future, take five minutes for your own:

  • Does your coverage reflect today’s numbers: tuition, mortgage, cost of living - not the year you bought it?
  • Would it cover college if something happened to you?
  • Does your family know there’s a plan? That alone brings peace of mind.

Life Happens’ free calculator gives you a ballpark in minutes, no strings attached. Or reach out to me anytime - no pitch, just a conversation.

What you can do?

  1. Share the scholarship with someone who might benefit - even if it’s not you.
  2. Check your own coverage. Five minutes, real peace of mind.
