A Primer

What is long term care insurance?

Coverage for the help you may need with everyday living — at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility — without spending down what you've built.

Care settings

What it covers

  • Home care and home health aides
  • Assisted living facility costs
  • Skilled nursing home care
  • Adult day care services
  • Respite care for family caregivers
  • Hospice care (in many policies)

Why it matters

Planning benefits

  • Protects retirement savings and assets
  • Reduces financial burden on family
  • More control over where you receive care
  • Tax advantages for qualified policies
  • Preserves inheritance for heirs

Various designs to choose from, depending on health, budget, and what you already own.

Traditional LTC

Dedicated long term care policies. Premiums paid through life of the policy.

Hybrid Life or Annuity

Life insurance with LTC benefits. If care isn't needed, heirs receive a death benefit.

Life with LTC Rider

Standard life insurance with an LTC rider drawing from the death benefit.

Short-Term Care

Benefits for needs up to a year. More affordable, easier to qualify for at 60s–70s.

From $25/month.Indicative entry-level pricing for short-term care at a younger age. Premium scales with age, health, benefit period, and inflation protection — talk to us for an accurate quote. We help match the structure to your situation.

Why Long Term Care Matters

Three reasons, grounded in numbers most households underestimate.

Likelihood of need

Care isn't a fringe scenario. For most Americans living into retirement, it's a basic need to plan for.

Planning early is the difference between options and obligations.

70%

of people over 65 will need some form of long term care during their lifetime.

Cost of care

Without coverage, care costs come straight out of the assets you spent a lifetime building.

As of 2026, private nursing rooms in major metros routinely exceed $130,000.

$100K+

average annual cost of a private nursing home room in the U.S., before extras.

Who actually pays

Medicare doesn't cover ongoing care, and Medicaid requires spending most of what you've saved first.

Over 80% of care is delivered by unpaid family members.

0%

of long term care needs are meaningfully covered by Medicare, contrary to what most people assume.

Real problems, specific answers.

Each story below is one situation we worked through, in the order we worked through them.

25+ Years matching clients to the right carriers, by hand.
No. 01 1035 Exchange

Tax-free LTC benefits from an old annuity

Couple held a $100,000 non-qualified annuity, worried about tax consequences when drawing for care.

We were able to provide a solution that turned all their gains into tax-free LTC benefits while preserving the original $100K for their heirs if care was not needed.

No. 02 RMD Strategy

Turning RMDs into LTC protection

Retired executive frustrated with required minimum distributions creating unwanted taxable income.

We provided a solution offering unlimited tax-free LTC benefits while reducing his RMDs and minimizing taxes.

No. 03 Underwriting

Coverage after a cancer diagnosis

Previous applications rejected by multiple carriers due to cancer history and ongoing conditions.

We identified carriers with more favorable underwriting for cancer survivors and secured a specialized policy with a rated premium — comprehensive coverage where there had been none on offer.

No. 04 Shared Care

Pooled protection on a modest budget

Middle-income family wanted to protect assets but had a limited monthly budget for premiums.

We designed a shared-care policy that pooled benefits between spouses, lowering cost without lowering coverage, with inflation protection so benefits keep pace with rising care costs.

What Our Clients Say

After being told by another agent that I was uninsurable due to my health history, Peachie found me a long term care solution that protected my retirement savings. Her understanding of different carriers' underwriting preferences was the difference-maker.

Frequently asked.

Six answers, ranked by what people ask first.

01 / What age should I consider buying long term care insurance?
Most people start considering long term care insurance between ages 50-65, when premiums are more affordable and you're more likely to qualify based on health. However, we've helped clients in their 40s secure coverage for maximum premium savings, and found solutions for those in their 70s as well. The right timing depends on your health status, family history, and financial planning needs.
02 / How do hybrid policies differ from traditional long term care insurance?
Traditional LTC insurance is "use it or lose it" – if you never need care, you don't receive benefits. Hybrid or linked-benefit policies guarantee something back, either through a death benefit to heirs if you don't need care, or a partial return of premium if you cancel the policy. While typically requiring a larger upfront investment, hybrid policies offer premium guarantees not always available in traditional policies.
03 / Can I use my existing assets to fund long term care coverage?
Yes! This is one of our specialties. Through strategies like 1035 exchanges, we can often help clients repurpose existing life insurance policies or annuities that may no longer serve their original purpose into long term care protection. This approach can preserve tax advantages while creating new benefits, making it an efficient way to fund care coverage without committing new dollars.
04 / What happens if I never need long term care services?
With traditional long term care insurance, if you never need care, there's no return of premium (similar to how auto insurance works). However, we specialize in alternative solutions like hybrid policies that guarantee benefits to you or your heirs regardless of whether you need care. Many of these solutions provide a death benefit, return of premium option, or both, ensuring your investment is never wasted.
05 / How does the claims process work for long term care insurance?
Generally, claims begin when you need assistance with at least 2 of 6 activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, and continence) or have cognitive impairment. Your doctor and a care coordinator will document this need. After satisfying the elimination period (typically 90 days), benefits begin paying for approved care. Policies vary in how they pay – some reimburse actual expenses while others provide a cash benefit regardless of actual costs.
06 / Can I choose where to receive care with long term care insurance?
Most modern policies provide coverage across a spectrum of care settings, including in-home care, adult day care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. This flexibility allows you to receive care in the least restrictive environment possible. We prioritize finding policies that support your care preferences, whether that's remaining at home or having access to high-quality facilities.
